Walk in KL Forest Eco Park

You could take in the sights of Malaysia’s British colonial buildings on your own, but to truly get a sense of its history, there’s also a free guided tour offered by KL City Hall that starts from the City Gallery at Dataran Merdeka. The tour consists of 11 historical sites and will take about 2.5 hours from start to finish. If you’ve been itching to try out some local Malaysian snacks, there’s also free tastings available. You can get here via the KL Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus or take a taxi straight to KL City Gallery. Alternatively, you can alight at the Masjid Jamek LRT Station or Pasar Seni Station and take a 5-7 minutes walk to Dataran Merdeka.

A popular hiking destination for locals as well as tourists, this millions of years old rainforest is clearly marked and regularly maintained. With its newest attraction of a 200m canopy walk, visitors are provided with an excellent aerial view of the surrounding forest and city skyline. This is definitely an experience not to be missed.

Guided tours by the Malaysian Forest Department are available at 10.30am, 12.30pm, 2.30pm and 4.30pm There’s also a cooling visitor’s centre with attractive displays. If you’ll like to do a spot of camping, you can always inquire ahead for permission.

To get to the park entrance at Jalan Raja Chulan, you can take a 10-minute walk from Chinatown or the Puduraya Bus Station. The Dang Wangi LRT station is also a short walk from the entrance behind the Malaysian Timber Product Gallery. Lastly, there are also steps near the foot of KL Tower which you can access.

For those who can’t get enough of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette in Paris and Versailles, I give you Rambouillet. Matakana

New Zealand produces some nice wines and what better place to sample them than the vineyard. Matakana, about 40 minutes from Auckland, is home to more than 30 wineries where you can taste the fruits of the vine. Matakana also is a good place to sample local produce, perhaps buying the fixings for a picnic on a nearby beach. At the Saturday farmer’s market you can buy foods, including local cheeses and fresh baked breads, direct from the farmers, as well as pick up locally made handicrafts. You’ll also find quaint villages on your day exploring the Matakana coast.

Verdun

Verdun is located in the Meuse department of northeast France. Dating to the 4th century, Verdun was founded by the Gauls and played a significant historical role throughout the centuries, but it’s now most known for part during World War I. Memorials and museums dot the area, including Fort Vaux, Mémorial de Verdun, Voie Sacrée, Verdun Memorial, Verdun Underground Fortress, World Center for Peace, Liberty and Human Rights – Verdun Episcopal Palace, Monument for Victory and the soldiers of Verdun, and the Ossuary. During the Great War, the Battle of Verdun lasted 300 days and is said to be one of the deadliest in history, with 230,000 dead {700,000 casualties}. The Ossuary is a memorial to those lost during the ‘Hell of Verdun’.
